Volume 1: Can I even do this?
If you are looking into starting something new, allow me to recommend the assorted works of Brené Brown and Gary Vaynerchuck! Listen to, read and watch everything you can get your hands on...you're gonna need it!
Starting something new will kick your ass! But if you're constantly looking for wisdom and seeking good counsel...you won't feel so alone in the endeavor.
Trust me! I know.
My name is Lizzie and you're reading this because you stumbled upon my small shop, The Thrifty Duckling. It's about 3 months old and like any newborn, it takes a lot of hard work and has resulted in many sleepless nights. But also, like a newborn...it results in a deep and unwavering love that you cannot possibly foresee before diving into it.
Brené Brown uses a Theodore Roosevelt quote for the basis of her book Daring Greatly and it goes like this:
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how strong the man who stumbles; or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasm, the great devotions; who spends himself in worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails at least fails while DARING GREATLY."
And it is a quote that, as I've started this new venture, has kept me going.
Yesterday I was pretty sure I couldn't do this! (In fact, most days I wake up feeling like I can't do this.) I was convinced it would never work, that no one would like what I've been working on and my whole idea would have been in vain.
If you're starting something new, I hope you have good friends like Cristina, Erin and Elizabeth. Friends who will bolster you up. Friends who will tell you to take the shots and just hit publish! Friends who know what you have inside needs to be seen by the world!
Dreams would die if not for friends like this!
Dreams will die if you sit by and let them. I guess what I'm trying to say is...DON'T.
